The Tourist Maps of Devon
Tourist maps by town or region to 1901
The following list comprises maps which can be construed as tourist maps and published in guide books and/or as folding maps (e.g. in covers) before 1901 and which cover only a limited area of the county.
The following maps have been included and described in The Tourist Maps of Devon. The catalogue is divided into towns and regions to coincide with the area covered by the map in question. Where a town is specifically stated in the map title then it will be listed (in alphabetical order) under that town. Where a map shows a district, it is included under either North, South and southeast or east Devon depending on the majority of the area shown. Sizes are given in millimeters (height then width). If any signatures or imprints are present, these are abbreviated sufficiently that a map can easily be identified.
A map catalogue entry (column 4) with simply a name, e.g. Gregory, indicates there is only one known state of the map which will be found alphabetically under Gregory. Where there is a number following, e.g. Murray 9, then there are several entries under Murray but map 9 has the area of interest. An entry in the form of a decimal, e.g. Wallis 1.3, indicates that map Wallis 1 is known in several states, i.e. that changes were made to the plate after first issue and the map was reprinted. In this example, the map with the signature or imprint denoted (Sold by J Harvey) is state 3 of this map. Maps denoted with a, b, c, etc signify several maps issued together in one guide (Coles & Owen 1a and 1b for example; two separate maps of Bideford) or multiple sheets as parts of an atlas etc.
